Luckhurst Family History

Luckhurst Surname Meaning

From Luckhurst in Mayfield (Sussex), which is recorded as Lukkars Croche in 1553 and Luckers Crouch in 1823, subsequently remodeled as if the second element derived from Old English hyrst meaning ‘wooded hill’. The place-name is probably to be connected with Henr' Luggere from 1296 in Subsidy Rolls (Mayfield, Sussex).

If so, this is ultimately a variant of Lugger. Alternatively, if the surname is to be connected with bearers such as Rychard Luckas in 1569 in IGI (Willingdon, Sussex) and Myldred Luckas in 1574 in IGI (Mersham, Kent), it may be a variant of Lucas, remodeled as if from a place-name.
