Mandel Surname Meaning
German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): from Middle High German mandel or Yiddish mandl ‘almond’. This could have been a metonymic occupational name for a seller of almonds. In the case of the Jewish name, it is one of the many ornamental surnames referring to different types of trees and their fruit.

Americanized or Germanized form of Slovenian Mandelj: nickname from mandelj ‘almond’, a loanword from Middle High German mandel (see above); or more likely from the Austrian German Mandl or its Middle High German form mandel ‘small man’ (see Mandl).
Jewish (Ashkenazic): variant of Mendel. English: variant of Mandeville.
