Naseby Family History
Naseby Surname Meaning
From Naseby (Northants), which is recorded as Navesberie in 1086, Naveneby in 1253, Navesby in 1305, and Naseby in 1447. The place-name derives from the Old English personal name Hnæf + Old English burg ‘fortified place’.
Though some forms suggest that it has been remodelled as if the final element is from Old Scandinavian bȳ ‘village settlement’, the 1253 form above indicates influence from the Old Scandinavian personal name Na. The Oxford Dictionary of Family Names of Ireland, 2021; compare Nainby.
There has been some confusion with Naisby.
