Netherclift Family History

Probably from Netherclifts Copse in Eversley (Hants) which is recorded as Netherclift in 1700. The place-name derives from Middle English nether ‘lower’ + clif ‘cliff bank’ (Old English neoðora clif).

There is also a field named Netherclif Lande in Reading (Berks) recorded in 1547–53 which probably contains the surname but is theoretically an alternative source. As the exact location of the field is unknown the topography cannot be judged.
