Nolin Family History
Nolin Surname Meaning
French: from a shortened form of a personal name such as Renolet, a pet form of Renaud. Compare Nowlin.
Swedish: probably a habitational name from placenames beginning with Nol- (from nord ‘north’) + the adjectival suffix -in, a derivative of Latin -in(i)us ‘relating to’ (compare Nolen).
However, at least in one case, it is derived from a place called Skällsäter by Latinization of Skäll-, erroneously thought to be derived from Swedish skälla ‘little bell’, Latin nola.
The placename is in fact derived either from Swedish dialect skäll ‘barren, infertile’ or from Swedish sköld ‘shield’.
