French: from Old French puche ‘purse bag’ (a word of ancient Germanic origin) used as a metonymic occupational name for a maker of bags and purses or a nickname for someone who was in the habit of carrying a distinctive bag or purse. In the Middle Ages, this was a universal personal accessory as clothing with pockets was unknown.
