Polglase Family History
Polglase Surname Meaning
From any of several places in Cornwall called Polglase (in Crowan, Cury, Saint Erme, and Wendron), Polglaze (in Altarnun, Saint Austell, Cuby, Fowey, Saint Mabyn, Mylor, Philleigh, and Saint Veep), or Penglaze (in Kenwyn, Lansallos, and Perranzabuloe).
The place-names all derive from Middle Cornish pol ‘pit; pool; stream; cove; creek’ + glas ‘green; blue; grey’.
There has sometimes been modification of the first element influenced by Middle Cornish pen ‘head; top; end; promontory’.
