Rickelton Family History

Rickelton Surname Meaning

from Riccalton in Oxnam (Roxburghs) from Old English tūn ‘farm village’ with an uncertain first element. In modern Scots rickle means (i) ‘a dilapidated structure’ (ii) ‘a dry-stone wall’ among other location-related senses; the ancestor of this does not appear to be responsible for the Roxburghs place-name but may have influenced its development.

perhaps also from Rickleton in Birtley (Durham) which is recorded as Rykelingden in 1339 and Rikleden in 142. The place-name derives from Old English denu ‘valley’ with an uncertain first element.
