Rivington Family History

Rivington Surname Meaning

From Rivington (Lancs), which is recorded as Rowinton, Rawinton, and Revington in 120. The place-name derives from the hill-name recorded as Rovyng in 1325, now known as Rivington Pike, itself probably from Old English *hrēofing ‘rugged one’ (a derivative of hrēof ‘rugged’) + Old English tūn ‘farmstead, estate’.

Medieval forms of this name are often indistinguishable from those for Rowington (Warwicks). But note Robertus Rivingtonman, 1379 in Poll Tax (Weeton, WR Yorks).
