Primarily from North and South Cerney (Gloucs) recorded as Cernei in 1086 but perhaps occasionally from Charney Bassett (Berks) which sometimes appears spelt with initial C- rather than Ch- in high-medieval documents as in the form Cernei recorded in 1086.

The Gloucs place-names derive from the river-name Churn (of uncertain origin) + Old English ēa ‘river stream’. The Berks place-name derives from the river-name Ce(a)rn (from British *carn- ‘rock stones’) + Old English ēg ‘island’.
