Seago Family History

Seago Surname Meaning

English (Norfolk) is a variant of Seager with an altered pronunciation of the final syllable. It is also a variant of Sigger, which has its origins in the Middle English personal names Sigar, Siger, and Sigher.

These names trace back to either Old English Sigegār, ancient Germanic Sigger, or Old Norse Sigarr, as well as Old Danish and Swedish Sighar. In every case, the name arises from roots that mean ‘victory’ + ‘spear’.

In medieval Norfolk, it is likely that the source of the name was primarily Scandinavian. The Middle English variants Seger and Segor may have contributed to confusion with Seager.
