Slovenian (also Šeme): from an old vernacular short form of the personal name Simon and its old variant Šimen.

French and Haitian (Semé): apparently a nickname from French semé past participle of the verb semer ‘to sow’. This surname is very rare in France.

It was brought to the US (mainly) from Haiti.

East African (Tanzania and Kenya): unexplained.
