from Middle English shete Old English scēat scīete or scȳte ‘projecting piece of land’. Compare Shute with which this name was interchangeable in western dialects of Middle English.
It survives as a place-name in Sheat (IoW) Sheet (Hants) Sheet's Heath in Woking (Surrey) and Sheetland in Ambersham (Sussex).
