From the county of Suffolk which is recorded as Suðfolce in a 12th century copy of a document from the 11th century. The county-name derives from Old English sūð ‘south southern’ + folc ‘folk people’.

It is named in contrast to Norfolk from norð ‘north northern’ + folc.
