From Tarporley (Cheshire) which is recorded as Torperley in 1198–1216 Thorple in 1282 Torpelegh in 1386 and Tarpley in 1665.

The origin of the place-name is uncertain but it may derive from Old English *þorpera genitive plural of *þorpere ‘person who lives in a secondary settlement or outlying farmstead’.

This comes from a derivative of þorp ‘secondary settlement outlying farmstead’.

Additionally, the name includes lēah which means ‘wood woodland clearing’.

Thus, the historical transformations of the name reflect its evolving significance through time.
