Tollerton Surname Meaning
From Tollerton (NR Yorks) which is recorded as Tolereton' in 1167. The place-name probably derives from Old English tollere ‘tax gatherer’ + tūn ‘farmstead estate’. Perhaps from Tollerton (Notts) but there is currently no evidence that the surname which derived from this place has survived.
The place-name is recorded as Torlaveston(e) in the 12th and 13th centuries and probably derives from the Old Scandinavian personal name Þórleifr + Old English tūn ‘farmstead estate’.
