Wildmore Family History

From Wildmoor in Belbroughton (Worcs) and perhaps also from Wildmore Fen (Lincs), though early evidence that the latter gave rise to a surname is lacking. A third possible source is the Weald Moors (Shrops), recorded as Wyldemor' in 1291–2 for which see the place-names Eyton upon the Weald Moors and Preston upon the Weald Moors (Shrops).

The place-names derive from Old English wilde ‘wild’ + mōr ‘moor’. There may have been some confusion with the surname Willmer; compare William Wilmore 1689 Angel Wilmer 1713 in IGI (Little Horwood Bucks).
