of uncertain origin. It might be a local pronunciation of Winfrey although this is a S Lincs name from at least the 16th century whereas Wimp(e)rey is found earliest in the Gainsborough area NW of Lincoln.

Similarly Wimpress which might have been reduced to Wimprey is a S Lincs name.

From the early 18th century Wimprey appears further afield including Dorset and Hants.
