Earlier forms of the placenames show that each contains a different Old English personal name (respectively Ælfheord, Ælfrēd, and Eorl(a)) + -ing- denoting association with + tūn ‘settlement’).

The name may also derive from Harlington in Yorkshire, with loss of initial H-, which contains the Old English personal name Herela + -ing- denoting association with + tūn ‘settlement’.
