In Ireland, this is a variant of Banville, the original French form of the placename, and now the usual spelling of the surname in Ireland; it is associated primarily with County Wexford.

English: habitational name from one or more of the numerous places in England with similar names such as Bampfylde House in Poltimore, Devon, and Bamville Farm in Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire. There may have been some confusion with Benfield.
