Polish, Slovak, Czech, Sorbian, Russian, Ukrainian, Rusyn, Croatian, and Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): nickname from Slavic baran ‘ram’ presumably borne by either a forceful lusty man or else by a shepherd. As a Jewish surname it is artificial.
