Italian (Piedmont): variant of Barberi. The patronymic is formed with the Latin ablative plural suffix -is imparting the sense ‘belonging to’ of in this case ‘member of the barber's (or surgeon's) family’. This surname is also established in southern France and in Argentina.

Greek: occupational name from barberis ‘barber’ from Italian barbiere (see 1 above) or a shortened form of a patronymic derived from this such as Barberopoulos.
