Swedish: ornamental name composed of the elements beck a variant of bäck ‘stream’ + man ‘man’ (compare Beck). This is also an Americanized form of the variant Bäckman (see Backman).

English: topographic name for someone who lived beside a stream from northern Middle English bekke ‘stream’ (Old Norse bekkr) + man ‘man’ (compare Beck).
