English (Northamptonshire): (of Norman origin): apparently from Old French bélier ‘ram’ hence a nickname for someone thought to resemble a ram in some way or possibly a metonymic occupational name for a shepherd.
In Northamptonshire the name attracts excrescent -s already by 1377.
Possibly also a variant of Beller with post-medieval excrescent -s.
