Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): variant of Berger 1 or Praeger. German: nickname for someone with a loud strident voice from a noun derivative of bregen ‘to roar’. This surname is also found in France (Alsace and Lorraine).

German: from a German thieves’ jargon term meaning ‘beggar’. French (Bréger): metathesized form of Berger.

In some cases probably also a Germanized or Americanized form of Slovenian Bregar.
