Christ Family History
Christ Surname Meaning
German and Dutch: from a short form of the personal name Christian or a nickname meaning ‘the Christian’. In both cases it is (ultimately) from the Latin name Christus ‘Christ’ which is from Greek Christos a derivative of chriein ‘to anoint’ a calque of Hebrew mashiaḥ ‘Messiah’ which likewise means literally ‘the anointed’. This is the title given to Jesus of Nazareth (see Jesus) as embodying the fulfilment of Messianic prophecy and expectation; he is the central figure of Christianity and most Christians believe he is the incarnation of God the Son.
