Possibly also an Americanized form of French Cobet: from a shortened pet form of the personal name Jacob. English (Sussex): variant of Cobby perhaps a simple adjective formation in -y from Middle English cobbe in a sense like ‘stout’ (hence ‘big important’) or ‘lumpish’.

Alternatively perhaps a pet form of the Middle English personal name Cob(b) (see Cobb).
