Possibly also from Cossington (Somerset), which is recorded as Cosintone in 1086 and Cusinton in 1196, though no medieval bearers have been noted in the south-west.
The three place-names all mean ‘farmstead associated with a man called Cusa or Cosa’ from an Old English personal name Cusa or *Cosa.
This etymology includes the connective particle -ing- and tūn meaning ‘farmstead settlement’.
