of uncertain origin. It looks like it should be a variant of the rare name Sibbles but there is no evidence in Staffs for that name or for the more common name Sibble or the rare variant Sipple to which an excrescent -s could have been added.

It may have arrived in late 17th-century Staffs by migration. Tooth 3 p. 203 suggests that it could be an altered form of Simple (see Semple) but the evidence is too slight and the reasoning too speculative to be convincing.
