Bosniak, Serbian, and Croatian: nickname for a strong, hard man from Bosnian and dialectal Serbian and Croatian demir ‘iron’, a word of Turkish origin (see 1 above).

Albanian: from the Muslim personal name Demir from Turkish demir ‘iron’. In North America, this surname is probably also an altered form of the much more common Albanian variant Demiri.
