Guadiana Family History

Spanish: altered form of Guadián (see Guadian) influenced by the name of the river Guadiana. This surname is very rare in Spain (found mainly in Palencia); it is most common in Mexico.

Where it may also be a topographic name from the name of the river of which the first part is from Arabic wādī ‘river’ and the second one from Latin anas ‘duck’.

The Roman name for the river was Flumen Anas ‘river of ducks’.
