Chinese: Mandarin form of the surname 光 meaning ‘bright’ in Chinese: (i) from Guang (光) the name of an ancient state (located in Henan province) annexed by the state of Huang during the early Spring and Autumn Period (770–476 BC). (ii) said to be borne by the descendants of Tian Guang (田光) who fled to other places during the Qin dynasty (221–206 BC) and later adopted Guang (光) their ancestor's personal name as their surname in order to avoid persecutions.

Mandarin form of the surname 廣 meaning ‘wide vast’ in Chinese: (i) said to be borne by descendants of Guang Cheng Zi (廣成子) a person who lived during the reign of the legendary Huang Di the 'Yellow Emperor' (c. 27th century). (ii) said to be borne by descendants of Gao Jia Guang Hou (高佳廣厚) an official who lived during the Qing dynasty (1616–1911 AD).
