For someone from the ancient Welsh principality of Gwynedd, possibly from the female personal name Gwyneth, although this is not recorded before the 16th century and is of uncertain derivation.

Possibly also from the name of the principality or alternatively a metathesized form of Welsh gwenith ‘wheat’, a term used in poetry in the sense ‘favourite pick of the bunch’.
