English: alternatively a borrowing of Middle Dutch Hakke, a de-nasalized variant of Hanke, which is a Flemish and Picard pet form of John. English: nickname from Middle English hak ‘unsparing ruthless’.

Jewish (Ashkenazic): metonymic occupational name from Yiddish hak ‘axe’.
