English: habitational name from any of the three places called Harton (Durham, North Yorkshire, and Shropshire). The Durham placename derives from Old English heorot ‘hart, stag’ + dūn ‘hill’, while the North Yorkshire placename may arise from Old English here ‘army’ + tūn ‘farmstead, estate’.

The etymology of the Shropshire placename remains uncertain. Irish (Cavan): variant of Hartin.
