Perhaps a variant of Huyton, a habitational name either from Huyton (Lancashire), Hyton in Bootle (Cumberland), or less likely Huyton in Blackrod (Lancashire).

The placenames probably derive from Old English hȳth ‘port, landing place’ + tūn ‘farmstead estate’.
