English (Norfolk):: perhaps a variant of Hellen or of Illing with prosthetic H-. topographic name for someone who lived on a hill from Middle English hilling ‘hill-dweller’ (Old English hylling).

The name is found early in Devon where this type of formation is common but it seems not to have survived there much beyond the 17th century.
