Chinese: surname used outside China to represent certain other Chinese surnames namely 侯, 后, 後 see Hou 1-3; 郝 see Hao 1; 扈 see Hu 2; and 霍 see Huo.

Vietnamese (Hồ): from the Chinese surname 胡 see Hu. Korean (Hŏ): written 허 in Chinese characters 許. All bearers of this surname in Korea are descended from the same ancestor.

According to legend, in AD 48 a sixteen-year-old Indian princess arrived by boat on the shores of Ch’angwŏn county in Kyŏngsang South province. The Karak kingdom's King Suro married her and out of respect for her origins allowed the second of their ten sons to take his mother's surname Hŏ.

Four clan seats in Korea are associated with this surname. Compare Heo, Her 2, Huh 1, and Hur.
