North German: variant of Hopp. South German: nickname from dialect hoppen ‘to hop’ (a variant of standard German hüpfen). This surname is also found in some of the neighboring countries e.g. in Poland and Czechia. Compare Happy.

Danish: from North German Hopp (see Hopf) or the Danish byname Hoppe ‘horse mare’. English (southwestern): perhaps a nickname for a dancer from early modern English hop in the sense ‘leap or step in dancing’ (first recorded in 1579).
