English:: habitational name from Heysham (Lancashire) from Old English hǣs ‘brushwood’ or hǣse ‘land overgrown with brushwood’ + hām ‘village homestead’. In the surname, the alteration of -s(h)am or -som to -son seems to have occurred quite late.

Variant of Ison with prosthetic H-. Possibly a variant of the Somerset habitational name Haysom which may be from Haysend in Tamerton Foliot (Devon).

The placename probably derives from Old English (ge)hæg ‘fence enclosure’ (genitive hæges) + ende ‘end’.
