from Ingoldsby (Lincs) which is recorded as Ingoldesbi in 1086. The place-name derives from the Old Scandinavian personal name Ingiald (genitive Ingialdes) + Old Scandinavian bȳ ‘farmstead village’.

adopted for Mac an Ghallóglaigh (see Gallogly) by mistranslation of gallóglach ‘foreign warrior’ or ‘galloglass’ as ‘English’. This gave rise to English and Englishby and then Ingoldsby by assimilation.
