English (Yorkshire): occupational name from Middle English jagger ‘carter carrier peddler’ an agent derivative of Middle English jag ‘pack load’ (of unexplained etymology).

The byname was used specifically in the Derbyshire lead-mining district for ‘the man in charge of horses carrying ore from the mine to the smelting-mill’.

Occasionally the name may be a variant of Jaggard with loss of d.
