German: probably an altered form of Jarausch from the Slavic stem jar which can mean ‘strong’ or ‘lush rank’ (in Slavic personal names; see Jaros). This is one of the German surnames that became established in southern Russia (in what is now Ukraine) in the 19th century.

In Germany it is found mainly in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate. Compare Yearous.
