German: topographic name for someone living near a castle or fort from Kastell ‘fort citadel’ (from Latin castellum) or a habitational name from any of numerous places in Germany so named (more usually Kastell).
Dutch (Van Kastel): same as 1 above or a variant of Van Gastel, a habitational name for someone from Gastel in North Brabant.
In some cases also an American shortened form of Slovenian Kastelic or of Croatian Kaštelan (see Castellan).
