Perhaps a derivative of the obsolete German personal name Kümmet Kühnemut Old High German Cunimund ‘strong guardian’ or ‘guardian of the tribe’; the first element is chunni or kuoni as in Konrad; the second is mund ‘guardian’.

Irish: apparently a variant of English Kemmett.
