Altered form of Cayo a surname of French origin (see Caya). Compare Chio. Japanese: written 木尾 ‘tree’ and ‘tail’ implying the ridge of a tree-covered hill where the name’s bearer lived.

The name originated in Okayama prefecture and is also found in Kagoshima and Ōsaka prefectures. A variant in Chiba prefecture is written phonetically 喜尾 the first character meaning ‘rejoice’.
