African (mainly Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Congo): unexplained. Japanese (Kōko): written 江湖 ‘public’ though the characters used literally mean ‘inlet’ and ‘lake’; the name is rare and can also be pronounced Ego.

Japanese (Kōkō): written 孝行 ‘filial piety’. Possibly also Burmese (Ko Ko): from a personal name consisting of the duplicated form of address Ko ‘elder brother’.

Polish: unexplained. This surname is rare in Poland.
