Finnish: habitational name from farms so named from lammi a dialect form of lampi ‘pond’ (compare Lampi) chiefly in southwestern Finland and southern Ostrobothnia.

In a few cases the name has been adopted during the name-changing campaigns of the early 20th century mainly to replace Swedish surnames.
