Irish: French-influenced Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Maoil Fhábhail ‘descendant of Maolfhábhail’ a personal name meaning ‘fond of movement or travel’. French: habitational name from any of the places called Lavelle (e.g. in Puy-de-Dôme) or La Velle (e.g. in Saône-et-Loire) all named with a regional variant of Old French ville ‘farmstead estate’ (from Latin villa).
