Jewish (Ashkenazic): from the German personal name Levin (see 4 below). As a Jewish name it sometimes represents a pet form of western Yiddish ‘lion’ (compare Lowe).
Russian: patronymic from Lëva, a pet form of the personal name Lev. German: from the ancient Germanic personal name represented by Old English Lēofwine composed of the elements lēof ‘dear, beloved’ + wine ‘friend’.
